Work the Election

We need customer-experience focused, temporary election officials to assist with Burlington’s municipal election.

Temporary election officials will support the advance voting period on Oct. 17 and Oct. 20, as well as Voting Day on Oct. 26, 2026, in voting locations across the city. 

All positions are paid.

Individuals eligible to apply are:

  • At least 18 years of age (16 years for the role of Information Assistant)
  • A resident of Ontario
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Not a registered candidate, registered third party advertiser, or closely related to one

Job descriptions and information

Comfortable with computers

Reporting to the Returning Officer, the SDRO is responsible for the overall administration and conduct of voting at the voting location.

Compensation for this position is $425, inclusive of training and voting day hours.

Note: this position requires access to a vehicle, the ability to lift and carry weights of 25-30 lbs and standing for long periods of time. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Picking upvoting location supplies on the morning of advance voting or Voting Day; checking for completeness against inventory list provided
  • Opening, setting up and closing of location at specified times
  • Confirming staffing resources, supplies and voting location layout
  • Setting up technology (wireless device and/or router)
  • Verifying number of ballots received and reporting any inventory discrepancies
  • Maintaining an hourly tally of all voters processed
  • Assisting election workers with any issues that may arise (Tabulator Operator, DRO, Information Assistant) and ensuring proper procedures are executed
  • Notifying the Returning Officer of absent workers, services that are disrupted, incidents that occur, or complaints received from voters 
  • Acting as liaison between the voting location and the Returning Officer
  • Overseeing voting processes, troubleshooting issues, maintaining a smooth operation of the voting location
  • Managing a large flow of electors within a voting location and assisting electors with disabilities, if required
  • Ensuring scrutineers and candidate representatives follow guidelines while in the voting location
  • Administering oaths as required
  • Ensuring all electors that entered the voting location prior to the close of voting can mark and cast their ballot
  • Communicating effectively with voters
  • Ensuring an accessible, transparent, positive experience for voters
  • Reporting results via telephone to the Returning Officer
  • Returning supplies after closing the voting location

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to resolve issues and communicate solutions to election officials and the public in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to learn quickly, follow directions and complete repetitive duties
  • Ability to calculate, tally and track the number of ballots manually, if required
  • Analytical reasoning skills and ability to multi-task
  • Ability to complete forms accurately and enter data into election software
  • Comfortable with technology

Reporting to the Supervising Deputy Returning Officer, the DRO is responsible for striking voters from the Voters’ List, issuing ballots, processing revisions to the Voters’ List and administering oaths.

Compensation for this position is $375, inclusive of training and voting day hours.

Note: this position requires access to a vehicle and the ability to lift and carry 25-30 lbs. DROs assigned to special voting locations will travel to multiple locations on Voting Day.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the opening, setting up and closing of the voting location
  • Determining eligibility of voters
  • Locating and striking off voters’ names from the electronic Voters’ List
  • Issuing appropriate ballots to eligible voters
  • Explaining the voting procedures to voters and directing them to the voting screens
  • Assisting voters with completing forms, such as the revision form 
  • Processing all revisions, additions and deletions to the Voters’ List
  • Administering oaths where necessary
  • Balancing ballots and completing the prescribed documents for submission to the Returning Officer after the close of voting 
  • Communicating effectively with voters
  • Ensuring an accessible, transparent, positive experience for voters

Abilities include:

  • Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills to resolve issues and communicate solutions to staff and the public in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to handle stress and maintain composure under pressure
  • Ability to identify and verify information provided by a voter in a timely manner
  • Ability to complete data entry of voter information on a laptop, using election software programs
  • Ability to calculate, tally and track the number of ballots manually 
  • Ability to multitask and learn quickly, follow directions and complete repetitive duties
  • Ability to complete forms accurately with clear and legible handwriting and good attention to detail
  • Proficient with technology

Comfortable with Computers

Reporting to the Supervising Deputy Returning Officer (SDRO), the Tabulator Officer is responsible for operating the tabulator to process ballots cast by voters while ensuring secrecy of the vote.

Compensation for this position is $325, inclusive of training and voting day hours.

Note: this position requires access to a vehicle, the ability to lift and carry weights of 25-30 lbs and standing for long periods of time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Picking up the tabulator on the morning of advance voting or Voting Day
  • Assisting with the opening and closing of the voting location
  • Setting up and operating the tabulator
  • Receiving ballots from voters and processing them through the tabulator
  • Resolving tabulator issues and errors
  • Assisting the SDRO to maintain an hourly tally of voters processed 
  • Generating a ‘zero tape’ prior to opening the location and a ‘results tape’ after the close of voting
  • Communicating effectively with voters
  • Ensuring an accessible, transparent, positive experience for voters
  • Returning the tabulator after closing the voting location

No computer skills required

Reporting to the Supervising Deputy Returning Officer (SDRO), the Information Assistant serves as the first point of contact as voters arrive at the voting location. The IA is responsible for welcoming and assisting electors, verifying that required documentation is available, facilitating the efficient flow of voters throughout the voting location, and for responding to general election-related inquiries.

Compensation for this position is $300, inclusive of training and voting day hours.
Note: this position requires standing for long periods of time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with opening, setting up and closing of the voting location
  • Ensuring the voting location is free of any campaign materials
  • Ensuring the voting location is accessible to electors and assisting with accessibility requirements, including opening doors for electors
  • Greeting voters and requesting they have appropriate identification ready
  • Assisting electors with disabilities, if required
  • Directing voters to the appropriate election officials
  • Redirecting voters who are at the wrong voting location
  • Checking in scrutineers and candidates 
  • Managing a large flow of electors within the voting location
  • Ensuring the voting location promptly closes on time and that all electors who entered the voting location prior to close can mark and cast their ballot
  • Ensuring an accessible, transparent, positive experience for voters

Abilities include:

  • Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to identify and verify information provided by an elector in a timely manner
  • Ability to stand and work for long stretches of time
  • Ability to handle stress and maintain composure under pressure
  • Ability to learn quickly, follow directions, multitask, and complete repetitive duties
  • Must be at least 16 years of age on Voting Day

Computer skills required

A list of standby staff will be maintained to fill unplanned vacancies on short notice on advance voting days and on Voting Day.

Time Commitment: 

  • 2 to 3 hours of mandatory training prior to voting days 
  • 3 hours at an assigned voting location, assisting with setup and opening, with the possibility of working:
    • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on advance voting; and/or 
    • 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Voting Day

Compensation for this position is $125, inclusive of training and 3 hours at an assigned voting location.

Note: Individuals placed on the standby list must be available to work during advance voting and/or on Voting Day. Standby staff will report to an assigned voting location for up to three hours to assist with opening procedures and remain available to fill any election official vacancies that may arise. If assigned to a vacancy, they will be compensated at the rate established for that position. If no assignment is required, they will receive a standby payment of $125.
